Make Your Own Unicorn Cake with This Simple Tutorial


The easiest way to frost the buttercream onto the cake before using the spatula is by using a piping bag. This method allows for an even distribution of frosting and is quicker and easier than just smearing it on the sides of the cake.

The new popular version of the unicorn cake. We provide everything you see on this cake which includes the unicorn topper of ears and horn, the eyes, and the mane of colorful rosettes. Please note that the mane design may be slightly different than the photo. All you have to do is choose the cake size and flavor!


Spread a thick, even layer of buttercream over the chilled cake using a palette knife. Divide the remaining buttercream into three bowls and colour each one differently using the gel food colouring. Ours were light pink, purple and dark pink.


Put a little gold lustre dust into a bowl, add a drop of water and stir to make a gold paste. Using a small paintbrush, paint the unicorn horn gold using the paste, as well as the inside of the ears, if you like. Carefully place the gold horn in the middle of the iced cake, with the ears on either side.


Divide the black fondant in two pieces, and roll each into a thin sausage shape. Shape each into an arch, then press onto the front of the cake for eyes. If you like, curve the outer edges of the eyes upwards for eyelashes. Cut into slices and serve. Will keep in the fridge for up to three days.

Unicorns have taken the internet by storm! I am a big fan of bright colors and sparkles, and knew this was a trend I wanted to jump on. I decided to make colorful cake layers with a fluffy vanilla buttercream, and decorate it with a swirled pink horn, bright buttercream accents, and some edible gold dust! Put 3/4 cup of frosting into four different bowls, and coloring them to match the cake layers (blue, pink, yellow, purple). Place 1/4 cup of frosting into a different bowl, and color black. This frosting will be used for the unicorns eyes, and can be placed into a piping bag with a small round tip. Put the other colored frosting into piping bags with various frosting tips. You can use whatever tips you have on hand! I used a Wilton 1M for the pink, an atecco 22 for the blue, a wilton 4D for the purple, and an atecco 16 for the yellow. Leave the remaining white frosting in your bowl to frost the cake layers.


Hi, I'm going to TRY your unicorn cake. My Granddaughter will be 5, so this is the cake she wants Grandma to make. My question is, I'm going to use 4 10 inch pans. Is there a way you can tell me how to do the math to figure out how much batter (I'm using the same that you used) and double the frosting? Every time I try to do the math, it never comes out. I'm going to have to do this 4 times since I only have 1 2.5 high 10 inch round pan. Thank you.

For the additional pink icing topping, we poured pink ganache made with hot pink melting chocolates and heavy cream on top of of the cake. You can use this tutorial for that rainbow dripped icing look.


I made this cake using 2 9inch pans, baked for about 25-30 minutes. The cake is really good and moist. I also added 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract. As for the icing, I must confess I did not like it very much. I guess I am not a fan of the flavor imparted by the coconut cream in the icing. The icing also was a bit too creamy. I certainly will make cake again but instead use a cream cheese icing. I am thinking this cake is versatile in that one could replace the strawberry jam with other flavors such as apricot. An easy rainbow unicorn cake that's soooo cute! This unicorn cake is rainbow on the inside and outside!
